IFHP Social Cities: ‘Measuring what matters’ Workshop
May 7, 2018 @ 14:30 - 16:30
On May 7th, join IFHP in working towards the development of its measurement tool on cities’ social sustainability. Work alongside other urban professionals in further developing the tool, by discussing and brainstorming on potential improvements and suggesting indicators that could be part of the tool.
Social Cities is a new IFHP programme aiming to strengthen livability and social cohesion in cities. The programme develops a method to measure, design and implement socially sustainable solutions, in collaboration with citizens, politicians and corporations. The workshop will bring to the same table a variety of experts from different fields, working together to identify whether the tool is able to capture the complexity of social sustainability, and contribute to clarifying social challenges. Thus, there will be plenty of opportunity for participants to make real impact on the tool, through feedback and suggestions on how the tool should be developed and what aspects, as well as indicators of social sustainability, should be taken into consideration in order to take the tool a step forward.
Implementation requires indicators of size, scale, scope and level of the challenges at hand. When it comes to quantifying sustainability, gauges of environmental impacts and economic consequences exist, and are more readily accessible. We are faced with a challenge of putting an overarching measure on social sustainability. This is the aim and ambition of the IFHP Social Cities measurement tool.
To quote Jan Gehl; “We measure what we care about”. We all care about our own personal social well-being. The social sustainability of cities affects all. We invite you to join this workshop and contribute with your knowledge and expertise to the further development of the Social Cities measurement tool.
