SUMMARY:Talkshop: Why do we choose city life when happiness is found in the countryside?
DESCRIPTION:Over the past decade\, the share of Denmark’s population living in the Greater Copenhagen area and in cities with more than 50\,000 inhabitants has grown by 5% — an increase of 376\,192 people.Yet\, a 2023 research project supported by Realdania shows that people living in rural areas are\, on average\, a little happier — challenging the narrative of the struggling countryside. \nWhile cities continue to project significant population growth and an urgent need for new housing\, perhaps it’s time to promote life beyond the urban centers — and to unlock the potential of rural areas\, for example by reusing existing vacant buildings for homes. \nIn this Talkshop\, we’ll discuss how transforming existing buildings in rural areas — rather than building new ones — can contribute to livable\, sustainable communities. We’ll also explore how a more nuanced narrative about rural life can translate into real projects and funding opportunities. \nBased on an inspirational talk by futurist Tanja Nyrup Madsen (FriFugl)\, participants will share insights\, ideas\, and challenges around how to make better use of existing buildings and resources across the urban–rural divide. \nTalkshop program08:30–09:00 Arrival\, coffee & croissants09:00 Welcome and introductionInspirational talk:Why do we choose city life when happiness is found in the countryside?– Tanja Nyrup Madsen\, FriFuglFacilitated discussion11:00 Summary and thank you \nWhereBLOXHUB\, Fæstningens MaterielgårdMeeting room: Los Angeles \nSign up here

SUMMARY:Building the Future: Engineering Living Materials (ELM)
DESCRIPTION:Unveiling Urban Futures: Exploring Resilience with BLOXHUB’s Roundtable Series \nJoin BLOXHUB’s Roundtable Series to participate in a dynamic and engaging discussion on critical urban challenges. The series will cover three essential topics: Traversing Smart City Data\, Optimizing Urban Microclimates\, and Engineering Living Materials. Led by the Urban Partnerships team\, each roundtable will offer insights from a BLOXHUB expert in the featured topic and allow participants to actively explore challenges\, opportunities\, and innovative strategies related to the topics. \nBuilding the Future: Engineering Living Materials (ELM) \nThere is an imminent and significant shortage of essential resources and materials worldwide. This shortage is not isolated to just the construction sector\, but it is anticipated to affect a wide range of industries across sectors. In other words\, the scarcity of crucial resources and materials is a pressing concern that has the potential to have far-reaching consequences\, influencing the functioning and sustainability of various industries globally. This underscores the urgency and importance of forging novel material streams and production methodologies. But in forging new material and production methodologies\, what new material worlds can we anticipate? \nThis roundtable endeavors to dissect the realm of Engineering Living Materials (ELM) – materials composed of living cells with the potential to fundamentally transform material production\, rendering it resource-efficient and ecologically sustainable and creating new functionalities\, interfaces\, relationships\, and experiences with our material world. \nThe roundtable will be introduced by Phil Ayres\, Professor at the Institute for Architecture and Technology at the Danish Royal Academy. Through reference to his involvement in the EU-funded EIC ELMs Portfolio\, he will provide an overview of ELM developments\, covering current perspectives\, immediate applications\, and medium-term prospects. \nAfter the introduction\, we will delve into uncharted territory\, discussing the production of an entirely new class of materials\, navigating legislation and certification\, and grappling with social acceptance and ethical considerations. \nThe roundtable will be held in BLOXHUB\, Bryghuspladsen 8\, 3rd floor\, meeting room Copenhagen\, 473 Copenhagen. \nPlease sign up for the roundtable here: \n \n

SUMMARY:Harnessing Citizen Data for Smarter Urban Development
DESCRIPTION:Unveiling Urban Futures: Exploring Resilience with BLOXHUB’s Roundtable Series \nJoin BLOXHUB’s Roundtable Series to participate in a dynamic and engaging discussion on critical urban challenges. The series will cover three important topics: Traversing Smart City Data\, Optimizing Urban Microclimates\, and Harnessing Living Cells for Construction Materials. Led by the Urban Partnerships team\, each roundtable will offer insights from a BLOXHUB expert in the featured topic\, and provide an opportunity for participants to actively explore challenges\, opportunities\, and innovative strategies related to the topics. \nHarnessing Citizen Data for Smarter Urban Development \nJoin us for a dynamic roundtable discussion on harnessing citizen data and engagement to drive intelligent\, resident-centered urban development. \nIn today’s era of data abundance\, there lies a wealth of opportunities to extract valuable insights into the behaviors and preferences of our city’s residents. However\, we must approach this effort with utmost care\, prioritizing ethical considerations and ensuring equity for all. \nTogether\, we will delve into the challenges of realizing citizen-generated data’s full potential. Building trust between state and non-state actors is paramount\, ensuring the reliability and sustainability of data gathered by non-state entities. \nWe have invited Peter Bjørn Larsen\, Director of Smart City Insights\, to kickstart the dialogue. He will set the stage for a constructive exchange of ideas and discuss the value of using external private sector data in urban development in a wide stakeholder context and what happens if we don’t. \nPlease sign up for the roundtable here: \n \n

SUMMARY:The Benefits of Nature-Based Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Unveiling Urban Futures: Exploring Resilience with BLOXHUB’s Roundtable Series \nJoin BLOXHUB’s Roundtable Series to participate in a dynamic and engaging discussion on critical urban challenges. The series will cover three important topics: Traversing Smart City Data\, Nature-Based Solutions\, and Harnessing Living Cells for Construction Materials. Led by the Urban Partnerships team\, each roundtable will offer insights from a BLOXHUB expert in the featured topic\, and provide an opportunity for participants to actively explore challenges\, opportunities\, and innovative strategies related to the topics. \nThe Benefits of Nature-Based Solutions \nJoin us for a discussion on how nature-based solutions can help cities to become carbon-neutral\, nature-positive\, and human wellbeing-driven. \nWith COP28 on the horizon\, a central focus will be on acknowledging nature as a cornerstone of climate action\, especially concerning CO2 reduction.  \n Nature-based solutions can potentially mitigate up to 25% of CO2 emissions in urban areas. This underscores the critical need for global political attention and emphasizes the importance of these solutions in achieving the ambitious targets outlined in the Paris Agreement\, thereby positively impacting our communities\, economy\, and overall wellbeing. \n Mike Ameko Lippert\, Strategy Director at SLA\, will kick-start the discussion with an introduction to a nature-based approach to urban design. The focus is on creating spaces that enhance biodiversity\, support climate mitigation and adaptation\, and simultaneously accelerate human wellbeing. \nPlease sign up for the roundtable here:
