SUMMARY:Money Talks: Rethinking a Circular Economy for Social Justice
DESCRIPTION:Be careful what you wish for! While a circular economy promises environmental benefits\, the pursuit of a more just society might not follow —it could even worsen existing inequalities. In our upcoming talk with Ken Webster\, we will delve into the intricate web of money and material cycles and explore the necessity for systemic change in our current economic landscape. \nReasons to Attend: \n▸ Understanding the limitations of a circular economy: Learn how a circular economy facilitates a green transition but might not inherently lead to a socially just society. \n▸ Unraveling the focus on recycling and behavior change: Explore why the emphasis often falls on individual actions rather than systemic and design changes. \n▸ The integral role of the money system: Discover why change is imperative and why we cannot rely on existing ideas. Would a system built on universal social dividends sourced from economic rents – the unearned surplus from monopolies\, fossil fuels\, real estate\, financial engineering\, and intellectual property help solve both materials issues and social justice? \nJoin us for this talk as we navigate the complexities of a circular economy\, exploring avenues for true circularity and social justice. \nAbout Ken Webster: \nKen Webster is a distinguished thought leader and expert in circular economy and sustainable development. He is a Visiting Professor at Cranfield University (UK). From 2010 to the end of 2018\, he was Head of Innovation for the Ellen MacArthur Foundation\, a circular economy pioneer organization\, where he helped shape the current notions of a ‘circular economy’. Webster is also an accomplished author\, with notable works including “The Circular Economy: A Wealth of Flows” (2017) and “The Wonderful Circles of Oz” (2022). \nPlease sign up via the form below: \nThis talk is part of the “Leave No One And Nothing Behind” a cooperation between the UIA and BLOXHUB.

SUMMARY:Building Integrated Agriculture
DESCRIPTION: This talk will illuminate the inherent challenges of building integrated agriculture and potential solutions to navigate them. \nDrawing upon Perkins & Will’s ongoing research initiatives and key active projects\, we will have a primer on prevalent urban farming technologies\, their integration within buildings\, and the resources available to ensure circularity. \nUsing Vancouver\, Canada\, as a case study\, we’ll examine how city policies actively champion resource resilience to tackle pressing concerns like food security and city resilience in the context of the climate crisis. \nThe discussion will center on the potential of building integrated urban farming\, highlighting concepts of waste-to-resource ecosystems. Furthermore\, we will venture into the realm of modular design frameworks and digital tools that can streamline the incorporation of agriculture within urban settings\, maximizing resource efficiency and bolstering community ties. \nSpeaker:\nMohamed Imam\, Ph.D.\, CPHD\, LEED AP BD+C\, Senior Researcher\, Architect AIBC\, Associate\, Perkins & Will \n  \n____ \nBLOXHUB & UIA World Congress of Architects CPH 2023 invite you to join our newest series of 9 Science Talks in 2023. We’ll delve into how we can reach a future where we leave no one and nothing behind. We leave more behind than we take. But how? The series will address social and environmental issues\, and our key drivers for navigating change and the themes explored in the upcoming series are: climate adaptation\, rethinking resources\, resilient communities\, health\, inclusivity\, and partnerships for change. Also\, just as the UIA\, we identify architecture as a main tool for achieving the 17 UN SDGs. This theme will be explored through various scientific speakers from different perspectives\, angles\, and viewpoints. \n  \nSign up here:

SUMMARY:Building with Living Cells: Alliances between Food & Architecture
DESCRIPTION:Does engineering new building material from living cells with intelligent properties sound like science fiction? Or are we on the verge of a revolutionary approach to producing building material using fungi and bacteria – where the built environment draws inspiration and knowledge from the food industry – and vice versa? \nIn the future\, constructing material from living cells with intelligent properties for the construction industry could be a reality. Such a breakthrough could help to tackle the global climate crisis by providing the building industry and beyond with sustainable\, living materials – that will even be able to repair themselves. Achieving such a vision requires new alliances within research and across industries – and points towards a deepening of the relationship between the food industry\, where the use of living materials is common\, and architecture. \nSpeakers:\nPhil Ayres\, Professor of Biohybrid Architecture at the Royal Danish Academy. Ayres leads the EU-funded research project FUNGATERIA\, which is investigating engineered living materials (ELMs).\nSerafim Bakalis\, Professor of Dairy Technology at the Department of Food Science\, University of Copenhagen. He is leading AMUSE\, exploring the use of digital tools to predict the behavior of powders\nDennis Sandris Nielsen\, Professor in Microbiology and Fermentation at the Department of Food Science\, University of Copenhagen. He is heading the Novo Nordisk Foundation  Challenge Program “PROFERMENT – Solid-state fermentation for protein transformations and palatability of plant-based foods”. \nPlease sign up here:

SUMMARY:Leave no one behind: Unpacking Exclusion in the Built Environment
DESCRIPTION:LEAVE NO ONE BEHIND: UNPACKING EXCLUSION IN THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT\n\nAUGUST 24 @ 15:00 – 16:00\n\n\n\nThis talk addresses how to pave the way toward a more equitable built environment by delving into the theme of exclusion and inclusion as it relates to architecture. \nThe talk examines how the built environment establishes distinctions between inclusion and exclusion and discusses\, from this perspective\, the norms and ideas inherent in existing architectural practices. Spatial and temporal distinctions\, as well as asymmetrical roles given to visual\, auditory\, tactile\, olfactory\, and taste elements\, are significant as they give rise to hierarchical relations between individuals\, forms of life\, forms of experience\, and knowledge. \nThe talk concludes with a debate on implementing the principle of “Dignity and agency for all people is fundamental in architecture; there is no beauty in exclusion.”  This is the first of the ten principles in the Copenhagen Lessons\, presented at the closing of the UIA World Congress of Architects 2023 “Sustainable Futures – Leave no one behind.”  \nBe prepared to expand your horizons and explore how to actively participate in the transformative changes needed to pave the way for an architecture that leaves no one behind. \nSpeakers: \nNatalie Mossin\, Architect and President of Congress at UIA World Congress of Architects \nChristiane Mossin\, Ph.D.\, Copenhagen Business School \nThis talk is part of our Science Talks Series 2023\, which explores the path to a future where no one and nothing is left behind. The series is a cooperation between BLOXHUB and The UIA World Congress of Architects CPH 2023. SUMMARY:Next Gen: Circular Economic Perspectives On Data-Driven Social Change
DESCRIPTION:Going from a linear to a circular mindset is a massive transformation in the built environment\, which can only be successful with an innovative approach and through partnerships for change. \nThe panel will address the circular economic paradigm from a global perspective\, presenting three different circular solutions based on data: \n\nToday the built environment uses one LCA method\, but will this be enough to ensure a circular transition? Industrial research indicates that this is not enough – but how many do we need\, and which ones are right?\nWhat does a digital solution which aims at creating an integrated\, scalable\, and cost-effective circular value chain offer to the construction industry\, and how does it ensure the circular transition?\nHow do we transform the informal waste supply chain in cities in the Global South?\n\nWill circular economy ensure social mobility in a global context? Do data-driven solutions ensure accountability? Do data-driven solutions enhance the built environment’s transition to a circular economy? Can transparency and accountability ensure social change? These are some of the questions we will explore in this session. \nStudents and young professionals curate sessions next Gen labeled with N. \nThis panel requires a UIA ticket

SUMMARY:UN17 Village – Designing With Biodiversity in Mind: Science Talk with Tobias Theil Konishi
DESCRIPTION:UN17 Village – Designing With Biodiversity in Mind \nTalk by Tobias Theil Konishi\, Project Director\, Architect MAA \nThe UN’s 17 Global Goals emphasize the need to safeguard the biosphere as the foundation for sustaining a healthy environment for all life. However\, building new developments will unavoidably cause harm to the biosphere\, both locally and globally\, due to the use of natural resources in construction materials. \nBased on his extensive experience with projects designed to minimize the loss of biodiversity\, Tobias shares his insights as a partner and advisor for the design of the outdoor spaces for the UN 17 Village development project in Ørestaden in Copenhagen. During the early development of the project\, SLA design studio worked on design solutions\, where addressing the loss of biodiversity was the main design factor. \nDuring this talk Tobias will share his insights about the design process and the lessons learned. He will also delve into modern designers’ challenges when designing with biodiversity in mind and offers practical solutions to overcome them. \nThe UN 17 Village is the World’s first construction project that addresses and incorporates the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals in a comprehensive solution. \nBio – short background: \nTobias Konishi is a Project Director at SLA\, leading a team of landscape architects\, architects\, and biologists. He specializes in identifying the potentials and challenges of a site and utilizing them to create a new innovative design. \nTobias has been involved in some of SLA’s most prestigious projects\, including Gellerup New Nature Park in Aarhus\, Amager Bakke Rooftop Park\, a biodiverse asset on top of a waste-to-energy plant\, and Søndre Havn – Køge Kyst\,  a new climate resilient neighborhood on a former industrial site in Køge. \nSLA is an internationally renowned nature-based design studio. \n__ \nThis talk is a part of Science Taks hosted by BLOXHUB & UIA World Congress of Architects CPH 2023. It is the 4th Science Talk in a series of nine given the title `Leave No One and Nothing Behind´. The series wishes to find solutions on how we reach a future\, where we leave no one and nothing behind. In fact\, a future where we leave more behind than we take. BLOXHUB would like to invite you to participate and engage with the researcher. \nSign up here:

SUMMARY:Urban Seascaping: Science Talk with Soo Jung Ryu
DESCRIPTION:BLOXHUB & UIA World Congress of Architects CPH 2023 invite you to join our 3rd Science Talk in a series of nine given the title `Leave No One and Nothing Behind´. In each talk\, we will dive into how we can reach a future\, where we leave no one and nothing behind. In fact\, a future where we leave more behind than we take. But how? \nOn April 20 we will be joined by Soo Jung Ryu. Soo is a Ph.D. fellow at the Aarhus School of Architecture. Her research project focuses on developing a new concept called “Urban Seascaping”\, which explores how coastal cities in Denmark need to live not just by the sea but with the sea. This entails looking further into the potential of marine nature\, such as seaweed\, as a key player in transforming the current hard-edge borders between the city and the sea to a soft and dynamic zone in light of sea level rise. Seaweed is an unexplored marine nature in Denmark that has numerous benefits\, such as filtering the water\, reducing the strength of storm surges\, creating habitats for marine life\, and capturing carbon. Therefore\, Urban Seascaping with seaweed will be the point of departure to induce transdisciplinary discussion about re-thinking\, re-integrating\, and re-envisioning the sea and its lifeforms into coastal cities in the Anthropocene. \nWhere: Online / BLOXHUB Arena\nSign up now 👇 \nThe UIA World Congress of Architects CPH 2023 is the world’s largest event on Sustainable Architecture.
