SUMMARY:Transformation af eksisterende bygninger: Netto Nul - fra bygninger til byskala
DESCRIPTION:Det byggede miljø står for 30% af Danmarks klimapåvirkning. \nOplæg ved:\nKate Raworth\, Co-founder\, Doughnut Economics Action Lab; When Copenhagen Meets the Doughnut.\nSimon Sjökvist\, Erhvervs-Ph.D.\, Cobe/Det Kongelige Akademi; Design- og transformationsstrategier.\nDitte Lysgaard Vind\, Chief Innovation & Science Officer\, BLOXHUB; Materialer i cirkulært byggeri. \nTilmeld dig via fomularen her:

SUMMARY:Mission Possible - Maneuverability within the Frames
DESCRIPTION:How do we explore and use the circular maneuverability within the existing frames of municipal organizations\, tendering legislation\, activity purposes\, building sector\, and geographical location? WE BUILD DENMARK\, Danish Embassies in the Nordic Countries\, Danske Ark\, and BLOXHUB invite you to a Swedish-Danish workshop that discusses and shares inspiration on how we achieve more circularity in municipal projects without going outside the frames of a safe operation space for a municipality – and how the dialogue with private collaborators can be lifted. The workshop takes off with presentations of explorative and ambitious circular projects and programs from Denmark and Sweden. These examples will launch the discussions with the very competent participants at this workshop. \nSite visit\nBefore the workshop\, you will have the opportunity to participate in a site visit. Magnus Alfredsson\, the Project Director at Varvstaden\, will be taking us to visit the historic Gjuteriet foundry\, which is a significant symbol of Malmö’s industrial past. The building has been re-designed by Kjellander & Sjöberg Architects\, and the project has brought new life to the area\, resulting in a dynamic urban district. The refurbishment project prioritizes circularity\, material reuse\, and renewable resources. Using glulam timber and CLT\, New elements integrating the existing steel frame have been added. Bricks\, metal\, panels\, and stairs have been sourced from Varvstaden’s Material Library\, giving a second life to old shipyard components. \nLocation: Gjuteriet\, Ångfärjekajen 8\, Malmö\nTime: 9.00 \nPlease check the box in the registration form below if you would also like to attend the site visit. \n_____ \nThe workshop is the third meeting in the Nordic Forum for Circular Solutions created by The Danish Embassies in the Nordics\, BLOXHUB\, Danske Ark\, WE BUILD DENMARK in collaboration with Göteborg stad\, Københavns Kommune\, Malmö stad\, and Stockholm stad.

SUMMARY:Building Integrated Agriculture
DESCRIPTION: This talk will illuminate the inherent challenges of building integrated agriculture and potential solutions to navigate them. \nDrawing upon Perkins & Will’s ongoing research initiatives and key active projects\, we will have a primer on prevalent urban farming technologies\, their integration within buildings\, and the resources available to ensure circularity. \nUsing Vancouver\, Canada\, as a case study\, we’ll examine how city policies actively champion resource resilience to tackle pressing concerns like food security and city resilience in the context of the climate crisis. \nThe discussion will center on the potential of building integrated urban farming\, highlighting concepts of waste-to-resource ecosystems. Furthermore\, we will venture into the realm of modular design frameworks and digital tools that can streamline the incorporation of agriculture within urban settings\, maximizing resource efficiency and bolstering community ties. \nSpeaker:\nMohamed Imam\, Ph.D.\, CPHD\, LEED AP BD+C\, Senior Researcher\, Architect AIBC\, Associate\, Perkins & Will \n  \n____ \nBLOXHUB & UIA World Congress of Architects CPH 2023 invite you to join our newest series of 9 Science Talks in 2023. We’ll delve into how we can reach a future where we leave no one and nothing behind. We leave more behind than we take. But how? The series will address social and environmental issues\, and our key drivers for navigating change and the themes explored in the upcoming series are: climate adaptation\, rethinking resources\, resilient communities\, health\, inclusivity\, and partnerships for change. Also\, just as the UIA\, we identify architecture as a main tool for achieving the 17 UN SDGs. This theme will be explored through various scientific speakers from different perspectives\, angles\, and viewpoints. \n  \nSign up here:

SUMMARY:The Very First House was a Wind Palisade
DESCRIPTION:DARE (Danish Network for Architecture & Urbanism Research) invites you to the research symposium: The Very First House was a Wind Palisade. \n‘A building’ is a thing\, while ‘to build’ is an action. To build a sustainable future\, we must address both. At this second DARE symposium\, ‘The very first house was a wind palisade…’\, we bring together researchers and practitioners from across the Danish research and practice environments of architecture and urban studies\, to discuss sustainable building practices\, including aspects of material scarcity\, growth and degrowth\, forms of dwelling and forms of living with and through the non-human. \nThe aim is to deepen our understanding of the composite nature and temporal interrelation of buildings\, the act of building\, and the flows of materials\, energy\, capital\, etc.\, that continuously situates circumscribes\, and (re-)produce both. Through keynotes and discussions\, the symposium unpacks the perspectives of both sustainable construction and the diverse activity of building and inhabitation – presently and historically. \nThis is the second symposium out of three exploratory forums for contemporary research in architecture\, urban design\, and landscape planning. It follows the first symposium\, ‘Entangled Scales: Urban and Rural Interaction’. The third symposium\, ‘The Power of Knowledge. Rights to Define Futures’ is planned for the autumn of 2024. \n________ \nCOFFEE & REGISTRATION\n \nWELCOME / Thomas Bo Jensen and Maja de Neergaard\n \nA BUILDING \n\nPeter Bertram\, Associate Professor\, The Royal Academy: Introducing the theme ‘The Very First House was a Wind Palisade…’\nHenriette Steiner\, Associate professor\, University of Copenhagen: Between Passion and Possession: Women Architects and the Houses they built for Family\, Love\, and Work.\nLærke Sophie Keil\, Assistant Professor\, University of Copenhagen: Rethinking the Concrete Landscape.\nSimon Sjökvist\, Ph.D. student\, The Royal Academy\, researches in expanded practices of reusing existing building stock.\n\nDiscussions \nLUNCH \nTO BUILD \n\nKemo Usto\, Ph.D.\, Aalborg University: Tectonic Metabolism – Towards a Slow and Narrow Material Diet in the Built Environment.\nOlga Popovic Larsen\, Professor\, The Royal Academy: Loadbearing Structures from Reclaimed Wood: Design Parameters\, Strategies\, and Reflections.\nMarkus Matthias Hudert\, Assistant Professor\, Aarhus University: Releasing the Knot: Spatio-temporal Aspects of Timber Construction.\nDiscussions \n\nBREAK \nPLENUM DISCUSSION / Moderated by Nicolaj Tofte Brenniche\, Chief of Research Administration\, The Royal Academy \nEND OF SYMPOSIUM \n______ \nPlease register for the symposium here:

SUMMARY:A Green Transition with Smart City Solutions
DESCRIPTION:LET’S JOIN FORCES IN SUPPORTING A GREEN TRANSITION WITH SMART CITY SOLUTIONS! \nSmart solutions are an inevitable part of creating sustainable environments. If we use data wisely\, we can move so much faster towards sustainability – push forward a green transition of cities and buildings and create awareness to engage citizens to act more sustainably. \nWe can create good stuff\, but if we join forces\, we might create magic ….. \nWE BUILD DENMARK intends to create a dynamic and informal interdisciplinary environment where clusters\, associated experts\, and stakeholders across borders collaborate\, exchange ideas and challenges\, and discuss best practices in innovation efforts. All to support a vision of creating sustainable and innovative solutions for our cities and communities. \nWe will start the journey by inviting you to a 24-hour workshop in Copenhagen. \nAt this join-forces workshop\, WE BUILD DENMARK wants to create a forum for sharing ambitions on innovative sustainable solutions\, bridge shared knowledge\, and organize cross-border networks to work together on possibilities and create solutions for faced challenges. \nThe workshop is an invitation to meet and engage in discussions on:\n– European collaboration on smart cities\n– Visions for smart solutions supporting a green transition in cities and buildings\n– Known challenges that we can address and push forward together. \nThis first workshop aims to identify a future collaborative cluster that\, through EU fundraising\, can work on cross-border smart city projects\, sharing experience and knowledge. \nThe network will decide on the themes to be discussed\, but we expect to take off in the EU mission for 100 Climate-neutral cities in 2030. However\, the program for the first meeting will include sessions for all to introduce ambitions and challenges. \nParticipants\nThe primary target group is representatives of smart city clusters in Norway\, Finland\, Sweden\, Ireland\, Germany\, the Netherlands\, and Denmark. When the primary group is formed\, a secondary target group can be involved: Representatives of internationally oriented companies\, universities\, and (GTS) institutes with the potential for major innovation collaborations.

SUMMARY:Open Call: What Is The Most Sustainable Building?
DESCRIPTION:What building is most sustainable? \nBloxhub and Nordkranen would like to identify and intend to pose this question for debate. How should we gauge and assess this? Should it be the house that has attained the highest score in DGNB\, or the one with the lowest LCA score\, or perhaps something else entirely? \nBloxhub and Nordkranen plan to invite various projects to illustrate and deliberate on this topic. These projects should encompass diverse facets of sustainability\, aiming to initiate a discussion about which elements can or should be quantified and evaluated. \nThis initiative would assemble a panel of experts\, the showcased projects\, and an audience\, allowing them to deliberate and offer concrete examples of what sustainability entails. The goal is to explore whether it holds significance to designate a building as the most sustainable\, fostering a meaningful dialogue. \nPlease submit your project and get a chance to show it in BLOXHUB Members Lounge. \nSubmission date: September 22\, 2023.  \n\nAn expert panel from business\, org.\, and academia will choose five projects based on the following:\n\nThe building that has achieved the highest score in DGNB.\nThe building with the lowest LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) score.\nThe building with the greatest potential for future recycling (dismantlable).\nThe most future-proof/flexible structure (most extended lifespan).\nThe building with the best focus on efficient space utilization. Energy/CO2 consumption per person rather than per square meter.\n\n\n\nThe five projects will be exhibited in the Bloxhub Members Lounge. The selected projects are not compensated for the cost of models\, prints\, etc. \nThe five projects will be revealed at an event on 26 October 20 23 at 14:00-16:00 in Arena\, Bloxhub. The event\, presentation\, and discussion will be moderated by the Chief of Innovation at BLOXHUB\, Ditte Lysgaard Vind. \nPlease submit project here:

SUMMARY:Building with Living Cells: Alliances between Food & Architecture
DESCRIPTION:Does engineering new building material from living cells with intelligent properties sound like science fiction? Or are we on the verge of a revolutionary approach to producing building material using fungi and bacteria – where the built environment draws inspiration and knowledge from the food industry – and vice versa? \nIn the future\, constructing material from living cells with intelligent properties for the construction industry could be a reality. Such a breakthrough could help to tackle the global climate crisis by providing the building industry and beyond with sustainable\, living materials – that will even be able to repair themselves. Achieving such a vision requires new alliances within research and across industries – and points towards a deepening of the relationship between the food industry\, where the use of living materials is common\, and architecture. \nSpeakers:\nPhil Ayres\, Professor of Biohybrid Architecture at the Royal Danish Academy. Ayres leads the EU-funded research project FUNGATERIA\, which is investigating engineered living materials (ELMs).\nSerafim Bakalis\, Professor of Dairy Technology at the Department of Food Science\, University of Copenhagen. He is leading AMUSE\, exploring the use of digital tools to predict the behavior of powders\nDennis Sandris Nielsen\, Professor in Microbiology and Fermentation at the Department of Food Science\, University of Copenhagen. He is heading the Novo Nordisk Foundation  Challenge Program “PROFERMENT – Solid-state fermentation for protein transformations and palatability of plant-based foods”. \nPlease sign up here:

SUMMARY:Leave no one behind: Unpacking Exclusion in the Built Environment
DESCRIPTION:LEAVE NO ONE BEHIND: UNPACKING EXCLUSION IN THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT\n\nAUGUST 24 @ 15:00 – 16:00\n\n\n\nThis talk addresses how to pave the way toward a more equitable built environment by delving into the theme of exclusion and inclusion as it relates to architecture. \nThe talk examines how the built environment establishes distinctions between inclusion and exclusion and discusses\, from this perspective\, the norms and ideas inherent in existing architectural practices. Spatial and temporal distinctions\, as well as asymmetrical roles given to visual\, auditory\, tactile\, olfactory\, and taste elements\, are significant as they give rise to hierarchical relations between individuals\, forms of life\, forms of experience\, and knowledge. \nThe talk concludes with a debate on implementing the principle of “Dignity and agency for all people is fundamental in architecture; there is no beauty in exclusion.”  This is the first of the ten principles in the Copenhagen Lessons\, presented at the closing of the UIA World Congress of Architects 2023 “Sustainable Futures – Leave no one behind.”  \nBe prepared to expand your horizons and explore how to actively participate in the transformative changes needed to pave the way for an architecture that leaves no one behind. \nSpeakers: \nNatalie Mossin\, Architect and President of Congress at UIA World Congress of Architects \nChristiane Mossin\, Ph.D.\, Copenhagen Business School \nThis talk is part of our Science Talks Series 2023\, which explores the path to a future where no one and nothing is left behind. The series is a cooperation between BLOXHUB and The UIA World Congress of Architects CPH 2023. SUMMARY:What Forces will Drive the Future of Food?
DESCRIPTION:Workshop & Talk \n12:30-15:30 \nPlace: Arena \nThis event is a collaboration between BLOXHUB & Schmidt Hammer Lassen\, who has developed a collective design methodology to translate diverse challenges into tangible solutions. This workshop will allow participants to share their challenges and experiences and work towards inventing solutions they can implement locally. \nParticipants form groups to co-create an open-source deck of knowledge cards as an idea bank and resource for imagining the potential of urban food systems. The cards will be developed on the spot with a customized phone app and presented in real-time at the event. \nA talk will follow this workshop:  \nFood-Hacktivism \nTime: 16:00-18:00 \nPlace: Arena \nThe future is already here; it’s just not evenly distributed. By looking at existing cultures and methods of producing food that could point to an alternative future\, we explore the potential of re-wiring our cities through hacktivism: the practice of stitching together new systems of self-sufficiency with tools and technologies at hand. \nSign-up here:
