SUMMARY:DIVERSITY IN THE SUSTAINABLE CITY OF TOMORROW
DESCRIPTION:Part of ‘Live Like Tomorrow’ at C40 World Mayors Summit\, Copenhagen 2019. \nFormat: Panel discussion \nWhile the need for “green transitions” has gained widespread acceptance\, the social dilemmas of such a process are also becoming increasingly clear: one person’s sustainability may be another person’s inequality. Indeed\, recent years have shown that well-meaning climate initiatives may have unintended consequences: Green technologies and services are often unequally distributed among populations\, and CO2-taxations risk burdening those who have the least. \nAs the recent Yellow Vest uprising in France—and\, on a smaller scale\, the resistance against offshore windmills in Denmark— have shown\, taking account of how climate initiates may be met with public resistance will be a critical element in the successful sustainable transition. For how will it be possible to lower the consumption of meat\, reduce air flights\, without\, for instance\, excluding certain demographic groups? \nDeparting in scenarios of future climate initiatives\, presented by anthropology students from the University of Copenhagen\, this panel will discuss how to ensure that urban climate responses across the globe fosters a transition which benefits all and not only the privileged. \nOrganizer: University of Copenhagen & Center for Sustainability and Society  \nMore info: https://www.liveliketomorrow.dk/events/diversityinthesustaiable/

SUMMARY:BUILDINGS FOR TOMORROW
DESCRIPTION:Buildings for Tomorrow: Why sustainability and public private partnerships is the answer to addressing tomorrow’s challenges today \nPart of ‘Live Like Tomorrow’ at C40 World Mayors Summit\, Copenhagen 2019. \nFormat: Debate session \nBuildings are key to raising the pace and scale of decarbonisation. Therefore\, we must look at the entire building lifecycle\, from the materials used for construction\, to operation and maintenance as well as the relationship of buildings to the grid. \nThis knowledge-packed and interactive session will bring together private sector innovators\, municipal government experts from the C40 network Municipal Building Efficiency\, and policy stakeholders to discuss how we can deliver the buildings we need for sustainable and liveable cities. \nRecognizing the need for collaboration this session will demonstrate how public-private partnerships are central to finding the solutions to achieving energy and resource savings in buildings\, focusing on 3 areas of innovation and disruption: \n\nMaterials: Buildings in the Circular Economy\nOptimal operation: Beyond Direct Savings – Towards Flexible Consumption\nBalance: Heating & Cooling Networks\n\nThe session is funded by the EU-supported project FUTURE. \nOrganizer: Gate21 \nMore info: https://www.liveliketomorrow.dk/events/build-like-tomorrow-why-sustainability-and-public-private-partnerships-is-the-answer-to-addressing-tomorrows-challenges-today/

SUMMARY:COLLECTIVE ENVIRONMENTAL BEHAVIOUR
DESCRIPTION:Collective Environmental Behaviour (Quentin Gausset\, University of Copenhagen). Part of ‘Live Like Tomorrow’ at C40 World Mayors Summit\, Copenhagen 2019.  \nFormat: Presentation and workshop \nPreliminary research results show that the carbon footprint of people living in eco-communities is 40% below the Danish average. This is achieved through 1) collective green identity\, 2) knowledge sharing\, 3) social and physical infrastructures\, and 4) everyday interactions with local governments that push the limits of local rules and regulations. Although the collective aspects of environmental behaviour are key to a fast sustainable transition\, these aspects are currently widely ignored or overseen by policymakers. \nParticipants in this workshop will discuss how to create or promote local environmental communities. Based on concrete examples from their own city\, participants will discuss how they can join forces with existing environmental communities\, or how existing social groups (based on sports\, housing\, schooling\, working\, trading) can be made “greener” and become future allies for a sustainable transition. \nOrganizer: University of Copenhagen  \nMore info: https://www.liveliketomorrow.dk/events/collective-environmental-behaviour/

SUMMARY:MASTER CLASS – CITY INDUSTRY DIALOGUE FOR CLEAN & HEALTHY CONSTRUCTION
DESCRIPTION:Part of ‘Live Like Tomorrow’ at C40 World Mayors Summit\, Copenhagen 2019.  \nFormat: The session on Clean Construction will be structured around a master class in the morning and a market dialogue in the afternoon. There will be a mix of presentations and structured dialogue between private and public actors in the construction area. \nThe expected growth of the urban population will drastically exacerbate the need for buildings and infrastructure in cities\, already contributing close to 40% of global emissions. In a climate crisis context\, cities can and will work to reduce these emissions through strategies including public procurement\, policy\, planning and building controls. They will do it better and faster in collaboration with the industry. \nThis session seeks to inspire and spark a dialogue between professionals and cities’ representatives to raise the bar for professional procurement within construction. The master class will introduce a holistic approach to emissions in buildings and present existing clean construction cases\, then discuss pathways for change and alternatives to cut construction emissions and air pollution. The market dialogue will focus on construction materials and machinery\, with an emphasis on cities’ needs and how the market can respond to them. \nNote that in the afternoon (13:00-17:00) a market dialogue between cities and industry will be hosted at another venue. This market dialogue will focus on the transition to emission-free materials and machinery used in construction. You can sign up for the marked dialogue here. \nMore info: https://www.liveliketomorrow.dk/events/city-industry-dialogue-for-clean-healthy-construction/ \nOrganized by: C40\, Gate21\, Innovation Norway\, & EIT Climate-KIC

SUMMARY:DRIVERLESS TRANSPORTATION: NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR CITIES?
DESCRIPTION:Part of ‘Live Like Tomorrow’ at C40 World Mayors Summit\, Copenhagen 2019.  \nFormat: Open masterclass \nSelf-driving vehicles won’t just change the way we get around; they can turn streets into living space. But technology won’t do it alone. A new Oslo study on a future with full implementation of autonomous cars shows remarkable results: If we manage to share cars and make public transit more attractive with driverless shuttles\, we can reduce the number of cars dramatically and move towards more sustainable mobility in our cities. \nCOWI and Gate21 invite you to an open masterclass where key findings from the Oslo study are presented together with a Danish project on how driverless shuttles can be integrated into city development and connected to the coming light rail in Greater Copenhagen – and hence become a driver for a major urban transformation. Together\, we will debate how autonomous vehicles will influence the urban fabric of our cities and discuss opportunities and risks. \nOrganizers: COWI + Gate 21 \nMore info: https://www.liveliketomorrow.dk/events/cowigate21/

SUMMARY:BLOXHUB SUMMER SCHOOL ON LIVEABLE CITIES
DESCRIPTION:In cooperation with Roskilde University (RUC) we are proud to present this summer school on liveable cities. \nCities have become the sites of both the world’s major problems and major possibilities. Consequently\, liveability has become a leitmotiv of urban development\, and it must be questioned what makes a city liveable\, for who and what\, and how in practice and theory? \nThe course introduces different critical perspectives on what makes cities ‘liveable’ and through various themes\, we explore specific efforts to improve urban conditions as well as layout the challenges involved. The course is organized around cases from cities around the world and especially Copenhagen and its surrounding lands. Particular interest is given to Copenhagen because it is a site through which ideas and practices of liveable urban living are being explored\, promoted and contested. What to learn from these actions and lessons? \nUnfolding liveable cities is about the ability to integrate social\, cultural and environmental dimensions. Key to this integration is to investigate and experiment with the diversity of cities and the processes through which life unfolds and cities take shape. Through research-based perspectives and a strong collaboration with local planners and practitioners\, you will learn not only from multiple perspectives\, but also work with real-life challenges experienced by various urban agents.
