SUMMARY:Opening up the New European Bauhaus: Place-Making or Space-Making?
DESCRIPTION:In Desire\, place-based interventions have been central to our learning and outcomes. And place matters—it matters whether we are working in the city of Kalundborg in Denmark or in Cascina Falchera\, just outside of Turin\, Italy. The histories of these places differ\, and their cultural\, economic\, and environmental characteristics shape what is possible\, the futures we can imagine\, and the actions we choose to take.  \nAt the same time\, we also talk about space—the space between buildings\, urban space\, cultural space. But what is place and what is space? How do we understand these terms\, and how does our choice of language influence how we perceive the present and imagine and co-create the future?  \n“Opening up the New European Bauhaus: Place-making or Space-making?” is the theme for the 3rd Irresistible Cities Lab event – a Desire Special event  \nDate: 15 May 2025 \nTime: 15:00–16:30 (CEST) \nLocation: Online – link to Teams meeting – no need to register  \nThree presentations will be grounded in insights from NEB-based or NEB-related projects. Between them\, we’ll hold a breakout session\, offering participants the chance to reflect in smaller groups.   \nOn the agenda  \nDr. Ammalia Podlaszewska\, Culture Goes Europe\, Erfurt \nBetween Space and Place: Ecosystems of Meaning in Transnational and Local Citymaking \nThis talk explores how space—as an imagined\, often transnational ecosystem of ideas—and place—as meaning shaped by communities—interact in contemporary citymaking. Drawing on projects like NEW INHERIT and Initiative Fröhlich-Platz\, we’ll discuss how co-creation can be facilitated depending on how these concepts are understood. How can shared values and creative collaboration transform both digital and physical environments into meaningful\, inclusive places?  \nChristina Schepper-Bonnet and Michaela Busenkell\, City of Munich \nCreating Change Together: From Spaces to Places to NEBourhoods \nNEBourhoods are co-created collectively with the residents and\, in turn\, foster new communities. Creating NEBourhoods is about active engagement\, quality of stay\, experience\, and identification. At the same time\, NEBourhoods can themselves spark the activation and further development of urban space and urban society. We’ll share what we’ve learned from cultivating NEBourhoods together.  \nAnne Nørgaard\, Eyes Hearts Hands Urban Revolution (EHHUR)\, Copenhagen \nLocal Voices\, Lasting Change: Participatory Placemaking at Lighthouse 1 \nThe Eyes\, Hearts\, Hands methodology introduces a new terminology\, new dialogue\, and a new way of working. It highlights how citizen involvement and bottom-up initiatives can shape the identity of urban spaces. The pilot site case demonstrates how residents and urban stakeholders are collaboratively transforming spaces into meaningful\, inclusive places— through cultural and social engagement – especially by activating and empowering younger generations.

SUMMARY:History as a toolbox - Talk with Roman Krznaric
DESCRIPTION:BLOXHUB members and friends\, \nJoin us\, in partnership with The National Museum\, The Research Center for Social Urban Modelling\, Fremtids Koalitionen\, and Grasp for a rare chance to hear renowned Australian social philosopher Roman Krznaric. \nNot familiar with Roman’s work? Catch up with his recent TED talk here! \n_______________________ \nHistory for Tomorrow\, Roman Krznaric invites us to rethink the past—not as a dusty archive\, but as a living laboratory for radical ideas. \nHow did Edo-era Tokyo thrive with nearly a million people and minimal waste\, thanks to a culture of deep circularity? \nCould the ancient water tribunal of Valencia offer clues for managing shared resources in a world of climate disruption? \nJoin us as Roman unpacks these timely lessons and reframes history as a toolbox for building a regenerative future. \nRoman Krznaric is a social philosopher who writes about the power of ideas to create change. His books include The Good Ancestor\, Empathy\, The Wonderbox and Carpe Diem Regained. \nThis talk will focus on the lessons from his latest book History for Tomorrow: Inspiration from the Past for the Future of Humanity. \nRegister your attendance here

DESCRIPTION:As of 6th August\, this event is fully booked. If you would like to be added to the waiting list\, please send an email to coordinator Karen Grønneberg at kgr@bloxhub.org – We will contact you if a spot becomes available.\nHow can we build an economy that works for people\, planet and place? Let’s explore together in this one-week participatory\, discursive and practice-focused Summer School. In collaboration with BLOXHUB\, Copenhagen Doughnut\, Wellbeing Economy Lab and University of Copenhagen. \nLecturers:\nJacob Rask & Mia Heide (course leads) with guests: Kate Raworth\, Katherine Richardson\, Mickey Gjerris\, Emma Holten\, Søren Nielsen\, Dani Hill-Hansen\, Inge Røpke\, Rob Shorter\, Ilektra Kouloumpi\, Leonora Grcheva and more to be announced. \nDoughnut Economics for Thriving Places \nIf the 21st century goal is to meet the needs of all people within the means of the living planet – in other words\, get into the Doughnut – then how can humanity get there? Not with last century’s economic thinking. Doughnut Economics proposes an economic mindset that’s fit for our times. It’s not a set of policies and institutions\, but rather a way of thinking and a set of principles to bring about the regenerative and distributive dynamics that this century calls for. \nDrawing on insights from diverse schools of economic thought – including ecological\, feminist\, institutional\, behavioural and complexity economics – it sets out seven ways to think like a 21st century economist in order to transform economies\, local to global. \nWith a particular focus on place-based transformation in municipalities\, cities and the built environment\, building on the Doughnut for Urban Development and Reduction Roadmap\, this course will introduce participants to the core concepts of Doughnut Economics as well discussing how we can build a wellbeing economy that works for people and the planet. \nThe course will be participatory\, discursive and practice-focused. Participants will also be invited to engage in further collaboration about doughnut and wellbeing economics after the course. \nWhere:  \nMonday – Wednesday\nSocial Science Campus – Kommunehospitalet.\nØster Farimagsgade 5\, København K.\nRoom 35.01.05 \nThursday\nSocial Science Campus – Christian Hansen Auditoriet.\nBartholinsgade 4A\, 1356 København.\nRoom 34.0.01 \nFriday\nEmil Holms Kanal 6\, 2300 København.\nAuditorium 23.0.50 \nWhen: \nMonday 18 – Friday 22 August\, kl 9-16 (physical meetup). \nFor who? \nOpen to all undergraduates and master students\, PhD’s from across all disciplines\, interested in new economic thinking with a particular focus on a wellbeing economy thriving within planetary boundaries. We also welcome professionals working within the built environment\, planners\, architecture\, engineering etc. The course is transdisciplinary and aims to be transformative. \nWhat will you learn?\nStudents who have completed the course will be able to: \n– Understand and apply the concepts of Doughnut Economics\, including the Doughnut\, as well as regenerative and distributive dynamics and broader debates within feminist\, ecological and wellbeing economics. \n– Engage with some of the debates within modern economic thinking and are able to engage in those discussions\, critically approach different perspectives and form their own opinions. \n– Apply the principles of Doughnut Economics\, such as regenerative and distributive design\, reciprocity\, interdependence and systems thinking\, within the context of the built environment\, place-based development and what they mean applied to other disciplines such as political science\, urban planning\, design\, architecture and engineering. \nTeaching and Learning methods \nMix of lectures\, group work\, games\, activities and field trips in and around Copenhagen. \nExam\nCredit: ECTS points are not automatically granted.\nHowever\, it is possible to get 7.5 ECTS points for the course. If you are enrolled at KU: You can pursue ’project outside of coursework’. NB you have to find a supervisor at signup. \nContact: \n \nMain teachers: Jacob Rask og Mia Heide. \nFor practical or genereal inquiries please write our Summerschool coordinator Karen Grønneberg (kgr@bloxhub.org). \nCopenhagen Doughnut Summerschool is a collaboration between BLOXHUB\, City of Copenhagen\, University of Copenhagen (IFRO)\, WELA\, Doughnut Economics Action Lab and Rethinking Economics. \nThe summer course is divided in two parts\, the first will take place five days in August (18-22) and the second in September (27 and 28) 2025. The course language is in English. \nParticipation in the workshop is free of charge and there is no course fee.

SUMMARY:Klimafolkemødet – Regenerative Dialogues
DESCRIPTION:This events moderator is Jacob Rask\, seen here in action at Folkemødet in 2024. Jacob is Director of the Regenerative Built Environment Network at BLOXHUB and former Economy Lecturer at Roskilde University\, and founder of Copenhagen Doughnut. \n\n\nWhat does the concept of the regenerative entail\, and how can it be understood in continuation of circularity? \nWhile circular construction primarily focuses on minimizing waste\, reusing materials\, and extending the life cycle of resources\, regenerative approaches go further by actively restoring the ecosystems we are part of. This means that construction not only reduces its negative impact but also contributes positively to biodiversity and local communities. \n\nAalborg Municipality has recently adopted a circularity policy\, with a particular focus on how circularity is addressed in municipal planning and permitting processes. In collaboration with the Aarhus Centre for Regenerative Building\, we explore how the building sector can become a driver of ecological and social restoration. Together\, we highlight the latest knowledge and practices within regenerative principles — and how they can be integrated into the circular transformation of the building industry.\n\nPanelists\nDavid Westervik – Architect\, Founder of Drivkraft and Grohuse\nThomas Birket-Smith – Architect\, Landscape\, Mobility\, and Climate Planning\, Aalborg Municipality\nJens Pedersen – Assistant Professor\, Aarhus School of Architecture and part of the Aarhus Centre for Regenerative Building\n\nModerator\nJacob Rask – Director\, Regenerative Built Environment Network\nTake part in the conversation at Klimafolkemødet in Middelfart 28th of August.\n12:00 – 12:30 ‘Gul’

SUMMARY:Irresistible Cities Lab - Collecting New European Bauhaus Gems
DESCRIPTION:In this session\, we’ll introduce the concept of the New European Bauhaus Gem — a standout result from a project or initiative. Whether it’s a tool\, an insight\, a lesson learned\, or a valuable finding\, a NEB Gem is intended to inspire others\, provide guidance and even be directly reused across different contexts and initiatives. \nWe invite you to bring NEB Gems from your own project or activity. Together\, we’ll discuss how best to collect\, track\, and share them going forward. \nA key opportunity for this will be the NEB Junction — the new EU portal for showcasing NEB results and amplifying impact. NEB Junction needs your help to locate NEB Gems from all corners of Europe\, and to define the essence of NEB in action on the ground. \nWe’re also excited to welcome EIT Culture & Creativity\, who will share their perspective on the NEB and how local actions and creative sectors are coming together in new ways. \nThis event is online! Registration through this link. \nYou will receive a link to Teams on August 27th.

SUMMARY:Klimafolkemødet - A Social Perspective On Energy
DESCRIPTION:How can we ensure that the green transition is also socially just?\nIn an EU context\, Denmark has relatively few people living in energy poverty — yet many are at risk\, including tenants\, young people\, and low-income groups. New research reveals that individuals experiencing energy poverty are not a homogeneous group and that distinct challenges necessitate tailored solutions. \nThis conversation salon invites reflection and dialogue: How do we engage those who are often excluded from the climate debate? Who takes responsibility for the social impacts of the energy crisis — and how can energy renovations and local involvement play a greater role? \nDrawing on European experiences and projects\, such as SUPERSHINE\, we will explore how the energy transition and social justice can be aligned. The discussion\, facilitated by European Green Cities\, will be based on open-ended questions\, sharing of experiences\, and joint exploration. \nTake part in the conversation at Klimafolkemødet in Middelfart 29th of August.

SUMMARY:New European Bauhaus – where are we heading?
DESCRIPTION:Five years ago\, President Ursula von der Leyen launched the New European Bauhaus (NEB). \nIt was created for Europe’s built environment to face the growing challenges of: \n\nResource overconsumption\nA shortage of affordable housing\nUnderuse and inefficiency in existing buildings\n\nSince then\, NEB has had a leading role in shaping numerous initiatives across Europe: \n✔️ The Affordable Housing Initiative is now defined as an NEB flagship\n✔️ The NEB Academy is building capacity for sustainable construction\n✔️ Dozens of European and local NEB projects have received funding from 2020 to 2025\n✔️ The NEB Facility is a new multi‑annual funding tool to support the NEB for 2025–2027. \nThrough this thousands of urban transformations have been designed and implemented at local level\, and – zooming out – the first big waves of building a European wide movement has taking place since 2020. \nAs the challenges remain\, it’s time to ask ourselves: \n\n\n\n\n\nHow do we make sure that NEB remains relevant and a movement to bring forward the much needed urban transformation?\nHow can we expand a European initiative\, sharing and scaling local NEB empowered experimentation and learning?\nWhere does the greatest potential lie\, and how can we integrate NEB into future architectural practice as well as urban planning and development?\n\n\n\n\n\nBLOX invites you to an event that reflects on the past five years of NEB. Through keynote talks\, a fireside panel debate\, and a hands-on co-design workshop\, we’ll explore how NEB values are being activated across Europe — from built environments and biodiversity to social inclusion and new aesthetics. \nMeet experts\, practitioners\, and changemakers from the three New European Bauhaus Lighthouse projects; Designing the Irresistable Circular Society (Desire)\, Bauhaus of the Sea Sails (BoSS)\, and Eyes\, Hearts\, Hands Urban Revolution (EHHUR)\, be inspired and take part in shaping the future of NEB through cross-sector\, cross-cultural dialogue. \nProgramme: \n \nPlease note that the first part of the event (15.00 to 16.15) will be both online and open to participants in BLOX\, Copenhagen. \nThis event is for urban planners\, policymakers\, private and public organizations engaged in urban development\, thought leaders\, and everyone with a keen interest in shaping a more sustainable\, inclusive and beautiful future! \nPractical Information\n📍Location: BLOX\, BLOXHUB Members Lounge\, Bryghuspladsen 8\, 3rd. floor\, Copenhagen\n📅 Date: September 10\, 2025\n🕛 Time: 15:00–18:30\n🎥 Format: Hybrid (in-person + online)\n🌐 Language: English \nWe look forward to welcoming you online — or in person at BLOX\, Copenhagen. \nSign up here

SUMMARY:BIM World CPH
DESCRIPTION:Fueling The Future Of The Building Industry With Data And Digitalization\nThe construction industry is undergoing a profound transformation. On one hand\, the sector faces increasing pressure to reduce emissions\, cut waste\, and design for circularity. In parallel\, a digital transformation is unlocking entirely new ways of thinking\, collaborating\, and creating in construction. But the truth is we won’t succeed with one without the other. \nAt BIM World Copenhagen 2025\, we zoom in on data as the essential link between the green and digital transitions\, because data is what turns ambition into action. With speakers\, partners\, exhibitors\, and delegates from across Europe\, the program brings international perspectives to the Nordic stage – and highlights the latest digital tools and strategies transforming construction across borders. \nBut we can’t get there alone. It takes shared knowledge\, cross-disciplinary collaboration\, and a united industry effort to unlock the full potential of digitalization. \nJoin BIM World Copenhagen – Scandinavia’s leading event on digitalization of the building industry 17-18 September – to explore how data and digital tools can drive the change we need. \nBLOXHUB NETWORK DISCOUNT  –  100% discount on standard two day passes\, and 50% off VIP package. SUMMARY:How cities work with New European Bauhaus – and what it means for all of us
DESCRIPTION:Europe has set an ambitious direction: 100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030. Desire contributed to this mission by including city administrations which are central to this mission – but also private companies\, NGOs and other types of organisations working in and with the cities.   \nTurin was involved in Desire and is a concrete example of a city which has embedded the NEB-framework into its urban development strategy. For local stakeholders\, this creates unique opportunities to co-develop and test solutions in collaboration with a city fully committed to the values and principles that guide New European Bauhaus.  \nAt the webinar next week\, you will hear how Turin and other European cities are applying NEB – and what this means for all of us engaged in urban development. You will gain insights into:  \n\nWhy cities are choosing to anchor their strategies in NEB principles. \n\n\nWhat new kinds of partnerships and business opportunities this opens up. \n\n\nHow companies and local stakeholders can position themselves as key players in the green transition – commonly contributing to the cities mission \n\nAs usual\, you will get the chance to meet new people and expand your network through small break-out sessions and by contributing to the dialogue in plenary. \nTeams link will be sent to participants by Monday 22nd of September.  \nDate: 23rd September 2025     \nTime: 15.00-16.30 (CEST)     \nPlace: Online – link to registration
