Thirty years ago, Copenhagen was close to bankruptcy. Today, it’s known as one of the world’s most liveable cities. That transformation didn’t happen by chance—it shows what’s possible when a city takes bold, consistent action. And it proves that cities can be powerful drivers of change toward a more sustainable and resilient future.
At the New York Climate Week, we launched The Copenhagen Way – Insight & Action at a Critical Moment for European Cities together with Ramboll and Urban Partners. The report tells the story of Copenhagen’s journey and, more importantly, proposes pathways for other city’s own playbooks.
Our message is simple: if Copenhagen can do it, so can other cities. But it takes collaboration, long-term thinking, and the courage to keep pushing. Copenhagen hasn’t stopped innovating, and neither can Europe’s cities if we want to ensure thriving, competitive and sustainable urban environments.

“Copenhagen’s strength lies in building alliances of co-responsibility. By uniting public ambition, private innovation, and the knowledge sector in long-term partnerships, the city has created solutions that improve everyday life tested locally and applied globally. This way of working has made Copenhagen not just a living lab, but a trusted export hub for the future-proof solutions the world urgently needs.” Ditte Lysgaard Vind, Chief Science & innovation Officer, BLOXHUB
