RESUMÉ

SPATIAL MOTIVES IN URBAN DEVELOPMENT – SUSTAINABLE TRANSITION DISCOURSES IN PRACTICE

Increased attention is given to the role of cities as facilitators of sustainable transition. At the same time, the urban development industry faces a gap between visions of a sustainable future and the difficulty of implementing concrete actions into practice. The case study of ‘Copenhagen’s new, sustainable district’, called Jernbanebyen, shows that ‘sustainability’-discourses are nonetheless very present in the urban development process. This Ph.D. project investigates what sustainability is by looking at how it works in practice. Knowledge which is much needed if wishing to overcome the difficulty the industry faces with lack of action to climate change – humanity’s greatest challenge of the century.
